Just as the saying goes, “To get divided after longtime uninon surely, and to get united after longtime division surely”. Globalization, informatization and networking are making the open sharing and boundary-spanning integration trend of ideas, opportunities, resources, knowledge and other innovative elements increasingly prominent among different regions, industries, enterprises, departments and even individuals. It is intended to break the “borders stand everywhere” pattern which has been left by the “differentiation thinking” era that advocates division of labor, (market) segmentation, competition and specialization. The whole society is in the stage of the “old boundary views” disintegration and the “new boundary views” construction. This situation forces the top decision-makers to re-examine the multiple boundaries inside and outside the enterprises, and consider the innovative designs of boundary-opening and boundary-spanning exchange activities, that is, business mode innovation (BMI). Under the background of the new era, the rapid changes in the business environment have led to the increasing uncertainty that many enterprises or executives are faced with. In the context with high uncertainty, it's more obvious that managerial cognitive or irrational factors, such as spirit (entrepreneurship), will power, intuition, expectation, beliefs, improvisation and so on, have an effect on the enterprises’ innovation decisions. Does a top manager's perception and re-cognition of the internal and external boundaries of his or her enterprise affect business model innovation, and how does the former influence the latter? In order to explore the influential mechanism between top-manager boundary beliefs and business model innovation, this study designs the relationship path of “top-manager boundary beliefs--knowledge fusion capability--the three dimensions of business model innovation (operation efficiency, customer value, financial value)”, and introduces managerial discretion (firm age, shareholding ratio and top-manager duality) and cognitive background (life experience, education background and professional background) to investigate the impact of different objective factors from organizational situation and personal demographic characteristics on this whole path, which can avoid some controversy of voluntaristic approach. Consequently, this study proposes a theoretical research framework including five variables -- top-manager boundary beliefs, knowledge fusion capability, managerial discretion, cognitive background and business model innovation, and verifies this framework through hierarchical regression and Bootstrap analyses on the 267copies of CEO sample data in China. It finds that: Top-manager boundary belief system, consisting of dynamic perspective, “neophilia”, hierarchical thinking, open attitude and boundary-spanning propensity, has a significantly positive effect on BMI; knowledge fusion capability is able to partly mediate the relationship between top-manager boundary beliefs and BMI; managerial discretion and cognitive background positively moderate the relationship between top-manager boundary beliefs and knowledge fusion capability, and then affect the performance of BMI. This paper reveals a new endogenous antecedent of BMI, and provides a new angle to answer “how to achieve BMI”.
