Natural resource depletion and adverse impacts of environmental degradation, and climate change have become a major public issue in most countries in recent years. Evolving information and communication technologies, volume of digital content, growing digital information needs/usage of users, and growing operational energy costs of libraries (operations, buildings, collections, equipment) create a significant amount of greenhouse gas (GHG). However, negative impacts on the environment costs are most neglected part. The current practices of content creation, access, and distribution followed by the global content industry are neither economically nor environmentally sustainable. In this dissertation the focus will be on the environmental dimension of sustainability, and how sustainable thinking can be embedded into the library operation, services and practice, reducing energy demands to access library resource, especially digital information service, as well as ICTs services, it did call for the creation of goals that balanced all three dimensions of sustainability in a coherent and integrated way, and cannot be considered in isolation from it as well as place the environment on a more equal strategic and position with economic and social development. Library take a leadership role in reducing energy demands to access library resources, facilities & space use, to initiative environmental literacy education, to engage with and respond to climate change and other sustainable development issues and the associated risks and challenges, etc. to meet the current and future generation users’ wants and demands. Conclusions: ? The results of this work indicate that e-reading is not environmentally sustainable compared to conventional reading, it has relatively high environmental impacts. However, identifying a clear environmentally friendly option is not easy, due to the variable parameters of user behaviors during usage, such as device lifetime, reading time, and number of readers, and ?nal routes of disposal of ICT devices. ? Printed resources lending services are environment-friendly services, it is another contribution to society and values - environmental protection of the social functions. It should be complementary by printed and digital media. ? Overall, the operation and practice causes a variety of environmental effects, related to energy consumption, water use and emissions of GHG as well as serious waste. “Going green” and environment friendly, sustainable information systems and services are requiring immediate attention. ? Relatively few faculty or administrators realize the extent of the problem, which can be demonstrated most clearly through the case studies. Embrace the notion of green in professional practices in mind and make significant green efforts to cause less harm to the environment and minimize ecological impact, to incorporate sustainability into our practices, our collections, our services—in other words, to keep leading by example. ? There is definitely room for improvement and enhancement to run their sustainable business and minimize the negative impact of their activities on environment. ? It is recognized that a sustainable library is the one that works towards minimizing environmental impacts while ensuring social equity and economic development. Sustainable development advocates a balance between economic growth, social equity, and ecology “that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Originality/value: ? One major innovation in the results is an acknowledgement that working towards sustainable development requires simultaneous progress on three fronts, with economic, social and environmental issues tackled together in an integrated manner, especially deserve special attention about negative impacts on environment about ICTs and digital information services. ? Several definitions for library environmental responsibility are proposed and a multi-faceted approach towards indicators is presented. Some new models for the study of sustainability and for the management of sustainable information systems and services are proposed. ? For many years the main priority of library has been to attain economic and social development rather than environmental sustainability. Rapid depletion of natural resources for achieving a sustained growth, can lead to a disaster in the near future. The analyses differ from those used in previous studies, the main environmental concerns associated with information and communication technologies are highlighted. Research implications: ? This dissertation marks an important milestone in putting our world on an inclusive and sustainable course, and opens up a new area of research on the environmental impacts of information services. If we all work together, we have a chance of meeting users’ information needs, research, communication, prosperity, and wellbeing, and to preserve our planet, and filling in the gaps in environmental sustainable library. ? We intend the dissertation to be useful for researchers in library and information science, especially in the areas of sustainability, environment concerns about modern libraries. ? It is expected that this study will be helpful to further develop the concept of library environmental responsibility, green information behavior, and will pave the way for further research. Sustainability and going green are a trend. ? The author provides many great links and resources for your exploration of the subject, and practice, of sustainability.
