The digital transformation of enterprises is a pivotal mechanism to foster synergistic development between digital technology and the real economy, thereby achieving Chinese-style modernization. However, the long-term nature, complexity, and uncertainty of digital transformation present enterprises with challenges such as unwillingness, hesitation, and incapability in the transformation process. Exploring the driving factors of enterprise digital transformation has thus become a critical approach to addressing these challenges. Digital transformation is not confined to the enterprise itself but extends to a vast ecosystem encompassing focal firms, suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders. From the perspective of supply chain networks, existing studies primarily examine peer effects in digital transformation and the role of common shareholders, while the impact of supply chain directors on the diffusion and transmission of digital transformation remains underexplored. By reviewing relevant literature on supply chain relationships and digital transformation, this thesis focuses on the relationship between the digital transformation of focal firms and the presence of board members from supplier or customer firms that have already embarked on DT. Using a sample of A-share listed companies in China from 2011 to 2023, we identify firms with supplier or customer board members and employ Python web scraping and text analysis techniques to collect data for empirical testing. The results reveal that: (1) When the originating firm has undergone digital transformation, supplier and customer board members facilitate the digital transformation of the focal firm; however, when the originating firm has not undergone digital transformation, these board members do not exert a suppressive effect. (2) The facilitating role of supplier and customer board members in digital transformation is more pronounced in firms with a stronger IT background among executives and lower ownership concentration. (3) Supplier board members contribute through both knowledge spillover and alleviating financial constraints, whereas customer board members primarily function through knowledge spillover. The innovations of this thesis contain the following three main points: first, it reveals the unique role of supply chain directors in the digital transformation of enterprises and complements the research on the drivers of digital transformation. Second, it enriches the cross-cutting research in the fields of corporate governance and supply chain management. Third, it expands the boundaries of the research on the cohort effect of digital transformation and examines the transfer effect of digital transformation in supply chain networks from the director level. The limitation of this thesis is the small number of eligible samples of listed companies. In the future, we can obtain more information from SMEs through interviews and research to verify the robustness of the results and further deepen the research on the influence mechanism.
