In today's era of digital information explosion, individuals are confronted with a substantial volume of information daily. The diversity and abundance of this information pose challenges for timely processing. Furthermore, the widespread adoption of storage technologies such as cloud space has facilitated a reduction in the cost of storing digital information, contributing to the accumulation of significant amounts of unorganized digital data by individuals. This continuous accumulation, coupled with a reluctance to effectively organize, manage, or utilize such information and a disinclination to delete it, is termed digital hoarding behavior. And this behavior, particularly prevalent among scientific researchers who contend with a substantial volume of academic information daily, has detrimental effects on the output of research results and the efficiency and productivity of their organizations. This paper focuses on researchers as the subjects of study, exploring the characteristics and influencing factors of their digital hoarding behaviors. Subsequently, specific recommendations are proposed for researchers to address their digital hoarding tendencies based on these influencing factors. These suggestions aim to enhance the efficiency of researchers, facilitate the transformation of their achievements, and provide strategies for the effective management of scientific research organizations. This study employs qualitative research methods, focusing on scientific researchers as the subjects of investigation. The research utilizes the grounded theory analysis method, semi-structured interview method, and key event interview method. The theoretical foundation incorporates attribution theory and ternary interaction decision theory to construct a theoretical model elucidating the characteristics and influencing factors of digital hoarding behaviors among scientific researchers. The study reveals that the digital hoarding behaviors of scientific researchers manifest specifically in two dimensions: emotions and behaviors. These behaviors are influenced by five key aspects: individual characteristics, individual factors, social context, technological context, and information characteristics. Building upon these findings, the study proposes corresponding measures and suggestions to help researchers overcome digital hoarding behaviors. Additionally, it acknowledges limitations in the research and provides insights for future studies in this area.
