The outbreak of New Coronavirus pneumonia has a great impact on the public's daily life, especially personal health. Therefore, during the epidemic period, the public will use various channels to obtain relevant information for their own health protection needs. In the context of similar public health emergencies, there are many studies to reveal the public's information needs, but few studies reveal the tasks that drive these information needs. At the same time, during the public health emergencies, search engine hasbecome one of the important channels for publicto obtain information. However, thoseinformation onthe internet will lead users to the state of information overload and reduce the information efficiency of users; on the other hand, some information with questionable credibility will also increase the cost of users to obtain information. Therefore, underpublic health emergencies, it is important to explore the search behavior of users on search engines and the problems of search engines to ensure their efficient and high-quality information acquisition. In this study, the information needs of college students in different development stages of public health emergencies were discussed by semi-structured in-depth interviews. Then, according to the information needs of college students in different development stages of public health emergencies, the tasks driving these needs are summarized, and three kinds of tasks are identified: understanding the information related to the epidemic situation, realizing their own health protection, and maintaining normal life order. In addition, the detailed attributes of these tasks are further described and discussed by using task facet classification. Secondly, this study discusses the impact of different types of tasks generated in the context of public health emergencies on the user's information search behavior and search evaluation on the search engine, and also investigates the user's actual performance when using the search engine to complete the simulation task. The results show that: in the context of public health emergencies, different types of tasks will affect the length of retrieval style submitted by users, the number of titles of search results, the number of search results pages browsed by users, and the time users stay on the search results page. At the same time, it also affects users' Evaluation on subjective task complexity, topic familiarity, task completion quality and post-test difficulty. In addition, in the context of public health emergencies, users are more sensitive to the time cost of search, theyalsohave higher expectations for the accuracy and authority of information. According to the experimental results, some suggestions are put forward to improve the search engine. This research has enriched the information needs and information behavior research in the context of public health emergencies, which is helpful to understand users' information search behavior in similar situations, and it is also conducive to search engines to provide more effective servicein similar situations service.
