Department of Information Resource Management
The Department of Information Resource Management was founded
in 1984 and was authorized as one of the five first institutes in
China to offer master's degree for library science in 1986. It was
renamed Department of Library and Information Science in 1987 and
was added a new program, social science information studies in 1990,
which was later changed to the program of information science. The
department changed its name to the Department of Information Resources
Management in April 1994. In 1999, it joined the Business School
and changed its name back to the Department of Library Science.
The former heads of department were Professor Lai Xinxia, Professor
Zhong Shouzhen, and Professor Wang Zhijin. The current head of department
is Professor Ke Ping.
¡¡¡¡The department is now an established institute which offers a
doctorate program for library science, three master programs for
information science, library science and archival science. It also
offers two undergraduate majors: library science and archival science.
There are now 45 graduate students and 155 undergraduate students
studying full time in the department, plus 22 continuing professional
development students who are studying for their master's degree.
There are currently 12 teaching staff members including 4 professors,
6 associate professors and 2 lecturers. A number of the staff members
are on various committees of the Ministry of Education, including
the Teaching Committee for Library Science and Archival Science,
and various committees of Chinese Society for Library Science. In
addition, the department has also 13 visiting professors, among
whom are members of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council
and world known scholars.
¡¡¡¡The department has a wide range of degree programs and a strong
tradition of academic research, which makes it an ideal place for
LIS students to receive professional education. It pays much attention
to both theoretical and skill training, particularly communication
skills and computer skills. Apart from the school's shared computer
labs and classrooms with audio-visual facilities, the department
also has its own information technology labs and a reading room.
These facilities, coupled with the department's rich teaching and
research experience and efficient management, have made the department
one of the best higher education institutes in China for LIS students.
Library science£ºThis program focuses on information
resource management. It aims to train students so that they will
become competent in theories of librarianship, modern information
technologies, management theories and methods, as well as in information
processing, organization, analysis, retrieval and utilization. Such
training will equip students with both transferable and specialized
knowledge/skills and prepare them for an information management
career in a variety of public or private organizations. The main
professional courses offered by this program include: introduction
to library science, programming for documentation, information resource
management, modern information technologies, document classification,
cataloguing, social science information retrieval, scientific information
retrieval, information consultation, modern library management,
information dissemination, intellectual property, information economics,
computerized information retrieval, electronic publishing, Internet
information resources management and use, digital library technologies,
etc.
Archival science: This program focuses on electronic
records management. It aims to train students in areas of theoretical
knowledge of archives and modern information technologies, so that
they will become advanced professionals in archive management with
both transferable and specialized knowledge or skills, competent
to work and research in various organizations of both the public
and private sectors. The main professional courses offered by this
program are as follows: introduction to archival science, programming
for documentation, modern information technologies, records science,
archive management, business archive management, archive conservation
technologies, electronic records management, archive document compilation,
computerized archive management system, integrated management of
records and archives, foreign archive management, archive retrieval,
government information management, etc.
